Chapter Five

Park checked the mirror once more before dropping his hairbrush into the basket on the bathroom counter. He straightened the new hand towels then turned the freshly-purchased fern just a little more to hide the slight irregularity in the pottery. Technically, it was a studio second and not suitable for sale, but he didn’t mind displaying the piece in his first real home. My own home…wow. It didn’t take a mental genius to figure out what made this small cabin a home compared to his previous apartments. Tanner. So why do I keep freaking out? Maybe because it’s never mattered so much before?

Earlier today, he’d been halfway across town when Janet called to cancel due an emergency child abuse investigation. Although disappointed, he couldn’t help but think he might have escaped a bullet—if he’d been there when the call for help had come in, there was no doubt his former supervisor would have double-dosed him on guilt to come back to work.

With the rest of the afternoon free, Park had been unable to resist the pull of his storage unit and retrieving some of his own personal belongings to bring back to the cabin. After a long minute of looking at his collection of artwork, Park selected a few pieces for the cabin and then hit a few of his favorite shops to find the perfect accessories.

With a final glance around the bathroom, Park hoped his tastes in decorating matched Tanner’s. Otherwise he’d spent way too much money today.

After saying goodbye to the boys, Park stepped onto the porch and locked the door behind him. As isolated as they were out here at Mountain Shadows, there was no sense risking someone coming into their house while he was down the road at the main lodge. He wasn’t sure if Tanner had his own key with him, but if not, he would no doubt come to find Scott, and since they’d be together for cocktail hour, that seemed like a perfect solution.

Park pulled his fleece vest closer around his neck, and looked up at the twilight sky. The clear afternoon had given way to heavy low clouds. The forecast had already shifted to a winter storm warning. By midnight, the roads would start to get messy and they’d probably be impassable for a few hours of the morning commute. The real question was would it be a delayed start for the public schools or an actual snow day—it was how the locals measured the strength of a storm.

Rather than taking the most direct path to the lodge, Tanner turned left and walked toward the main entrance of the campground before taking the side road that ran between the smaller cabins. When he reached the sign that indicated the rest of the cabins were private residences, he continued, knowing the road circled around to end at the front of the lodge.

Although it was nearly dark, Park looked toward the top of the tall pines, hoping to catch sight of owls or bats or any of the other nocturnal birds indigenous to the area.
